Blair Unida is a community of parents, teachers, and neighbors who have come together to support local families whose children attend schools within the Blair Cluster. We are a schools-connected chapter of the Montgomery County Immigrant Rights Collective (MoCo IRC).

We are a chapter of MoCo Immigrant Rights Collective (MoCo IRC). Our legal fund is a core component of our efforts, built on the foundation of our Blair Bears (Care Bears), who connect with impacted families to support them in accessing supports that meet their immediate and ongoing needs. We strive to coordinate closely with staff at our local schools, who play a pivotal role in ensuring families and students can access the many resources available through MCPS and our county.

To date, Blair Unida has supported 30 families with addressing immediate emergency needs, charting a path through this traumatic time via significant ongoing care support, and for six families, direct financial support for their legal cases.

We are helping families like Fabiola’s. ICE has cruelly detained both her husband and 16-year-old daughter. In September, her husband thought he was going to a routine appointment, the last step in the process of getting their daughter released from ICE custody after her perilous but necessary journey fleeing Guatemala. The family had complied with all government requirements and was excited to welcome her home. She would have started the school year just a few weeks late, becoming a Blair Blazer. But, instead, when he arrived at the appointment, he was detained by ICE.

We will continue to raise money for other needs as they arise. Many Blair families are being torn apart by unjust and unnecessary immigration apprehension, detention, and removal. Legal fees for one case are often tens of thousands of dollars. Thank you for supporting us in being Blair Unida!

We are in partnership with a 501(c)3 nonprofit, Direct Support for Immigrants (DSI), an organization that also supports our immigrant neighbors. Through a thorough vetted collaboration, DSI is now the fiscal sponsor of Blair Unida, which means that your donations are tax deductible and that you can receive a receipt for your donation if you need one.
